Why would someone pay $120 for a 2 Meter HDMI cable?

I am looking at a CompUSA ad that came in todays paper. The ad lists a Monster Cable 2 Meter HDMI cable for $99.99, Reg $119.99 save $20 instantly.

You can buy similar cables for about $10. Since these cables transfer digital signals, they either work or they don't. The performance of the $10 cable is the same as the $120 cable.

People tend to believe that they are getting the better product by paying more for it. I know better than that, yet stores like Comp USA will continue to sell such things because people will believe what I just typed out. If "it" came from a certain store, it must be a superior product. This is not unlike anything else in the market. People who own a Cadillac will most likely only buy a fan belt from the dealership, absolutely certain that they are getting the best product because "Cadillac" is stamped on it. What they fail to realize is that the belt they got from the dealership is no different from the one down at the hardware store because both came from the same material stock from the same company that makes them. It is a matter of what people believe.

  • A monster cable is a brand name people will pay more for. Their products may last longer than the average cable. HD TVs look much better when using decent cables. People who are picky or into the best quality that can get will pay more for a cable like that.

The ONLY reason to get a $100 cable is if you want to hide it in the walls and the $100 cable is the only one long enough to accomplish that task. If the $20 cable looks better to your eyes (as it goes with your decor) you could get the $20 one instead of the $10 one but a cable is a cable. And Belkin makes good cables.
