How do you open in DOS format ? So I can reformat the hard drive?
I love you genius types that remember all this stuff.
I have a 2001 laptop computer that I want to reformat. I would like to know how to make it go into DOS format so I can reformat it clean before I reload Windows onto it. Also, what do I type into DOS to get it to start formating.
I use to know how to do this, but I just don't remember the steps, once I read it again I am sure it will come all back .
Thanks to all you genius type people for helping me out !!!
It was really slow before so I want to reformat it just incase it had viruses on it, etc.

During bootup, hold down shift and start pressing the f8 key until you get a boot menu. Choose to boot to DOS prompt. Once there, type "format c: /s". Make sure you have drivers for all of your hardware before you do this. This command will format your hard drive leaving only the system files needed for it to boot back to a DOS prompt afterwards.

you may't format thepersistent you're utilising!! Boot to a floppy and then format. in case you only pick to re-installation XP, then you truly can do this through booting with the domicile windows XP CD and choosing New setting up. that is going to grant you the alternative of repartitioning and reformatting.

First you need to make a start up disk under add remove programs for ME then restart the computer with the disk in the drive and bios set to floppy first then type format and answer yes to the resulting question. if you have second thoughts just turn off the computer before it is finished and it will be the same as before.

You can reformat the drive when you load windows. It will detect the previous installation and give you the option to reformat.

just click ms-dos on accersories and click command prompt and type in Format C:, and then it is going to ask u "Are u sure u want to format?" and click "y" or yes, and go from there. after its done just re-boot and pop in the cd and load windows, and u should be ready to go.
