What causes this heart pounding?

These are the circumstances every time - if I eat a big steak late in the evening. STEAK (it doesn't happen with any other kind of food). My dad (no biological relationship if it makes a difference) said it happens to him too when he fills up on any kind of protein too soon before going to bed. Hours later we wake up with this rediculous (sp) kind of scary heart pounding What is going on?

Update:

OK - instead of commenting as if I were an idiot... I was at a wedding and we weren't served the STEAK until almost 10 pm. So no - I don't make it a habit to "eat steak before bed" I want to know if anyone knows WHY BESIDES the fact that "I ate it before bed"COME ON people... This has happened to me about 4 times in my life. What is going on physically?

    Here it is,

First, when you eat and this is really any meal, your body pushes more blood to your stomach than normal so it can get the nutrients from the digesting foods. This in turn leaves a little less blood for the rest of your body. So in order to compensate for this change your heart beat stronger, not faster but more forceful. This is perfectly normal, and would be expected.

Second, you notice this at night for two reasons one, you are laying down. This makes it easier for the heart to pump the blood since it is no longer fighting gravity. So you feel it even stronger. Then the second part is that you are laying quietly and that is the only stimulas that you are getting is your own heart beat. You may notice this same thing if you ate a big steak at lunch time and layed down in a quiet place.

    All very normal.

Protein are the largest molecules your body has to try to digest. Once you lie down and start to go to sleep your body goes into the night mode. This means your heart, brain and digestive tract want to slow down. However, with food (of any kind) sooner than 1 hour before bedtime your body can't slow down and therefore instead of "sleeping" your digestive tract is working overtime which means your heart has to work overtime too. Never under any circumstances lie down even if it's not for sleep until at least 1 hour has passed from your last meal.

Ok well first of all stop eating steak before bed! Next, stop eating steak before bed and if that doesn't work then stop eating steak before bed =) Maybe your body is having a hard time with all that protein at once or if you season it up maybe it's the salt or maybe there's msg in your seasoning..........talk to your doctor if it's that bothersome or ...............stop eating steak before bed!

    Take Care,

Didin't your mother ever teach you it's not healthy to comsume food before bedtime. Needs time to digest. Very hard on you and your digestive system, especially steak. Sweet dreams.
