For DIY home studio recordings, what software would you recommend?
I want to record my own vocal / instrumental tracks, mix them, and use my productions in my own DIY movie making, etc.
What software would you recommend?
(I hope I put this in the correct category!)
I'm talking about doing this as a hobby in my own home, not as a professional in a really souped up studio.
for a PC, what would compare to "GarageBand?"

I would say Garageband ( http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/ ) if you had a mac. Its the cheapest and best software for that sort of use.
If you wanna go a little higher up, get an Mbox with Pro Tools (or an Mbox Mini)

If you are using a Mac, you already have Garage Band.
You can do all the above with that program.
For a PC, is there a version of Reason available?
That is a very powerful sound editing program.
