Need a good ending for a play I will attempt to write?

Because I criticized a play, my wife said, "If you think you can do better, write one yourself."

I am now going to try and since I've been told that "one should not begin to write a play until one has an ending in mind," I am looking for an ending.

I would like an ending that would make the audience leave the theater thinking seriously about the affect on the Leading Man or Woman.

What do you suggest?

Update:

Now that I have seen the first 8 answers, I feel that there is a lot of possibilities in this form of correspondence.

I especially like the distorted and super critical answers; Piyo is a good example.

Ihave the feeling that I am going to like this thing, particularly the willingness to offer some support to a fledging playwright.

I can't waait to read the next 8 or 10 replies. Keep up the good work, folks.

Update 2:

I see that I neglected to tell you that to improve continuity I intend to begin at the ending you supply and work my way to the beginning. By knowing what happened and why, before it happens, the story should remain true to fact.

The two positive replies, thedeinn.. and fyxe, are constructive and appreciated. Thank You. You are the kind of people who will make this Yahoo whole thing a great success. The others, those who can only offer wacko comments, are fringe elements that exist everywhere.

Without reading beyond answer one, and with no offense to you or others, I suggest your wife was wrong to say such, but you; more wrong to assume she was correct.

Being a critic isn't akin to Satan, nor does it strictly mean one feels much more than a different opinion. In the USA the constitution supposedly allows, in ammendment 1, some levels of "freedom of speech" (that should certainly spill over into freedom of thought)

For you to ask here is also bordering on the absurd, and I have suggestions. First I have a bit more critisism.

To assume one can "DO BETTER" is ludicrous in theory, since,,, if it can be done it will be,,,MAYBE!

To WRITE a "story" certainly one needs to segment it, and likely to have an ending; within the entire IDEA of the tale is a good way to start. That said however, as a writer, many of my "stories" not only write themselves "in part" but also evolve to an ending I may have only, vaguely surmised in my "design."

To "counter" your wife, perhaps you need only to write an alternate end to something you are being berated for viewing and critiquing. I'm saddened though by what might be far deeper issues in your relationship.

Still and in total, it is wrong to ask here.

The idea of story telling, performance art, fine artistry in paintings, is to ENGAGE an audience from the first word to whatever end. Obviously there are situations that offer "twists" and surprises, IE: Mystery stories; but gaining and KEEPING an audiences attention, until whatever the end is,,, is what's more important.

I also have to say, LEADING roles are not always those offering the most impact, and if the audience isn't considering the "WHOLE PIE" then the aftertaste of just one piece probably won't last long.

You got some bad advice, especially for a new playwright. Just write. You'll scrap ideas and start over and change your mind and start over and write until you're dry and then start again.

The ending isn't as important as the middle. Ever hear "it's not the destination, it's the journey"?

Plays aren't like movies where everyone can die, or the boy can get the girl at the end and the audience is satisfied with 10 dollars well spent.

Find your middle, the climax, and work from there.

Oh, and make sure you're 'Leading Person", your protagonist, has a good old fashioned flaw. Audiences care/think seriously, about flawed people. They see themselves.

    maybe get a book.

This is an impossible question and the advice was bad. Never write unless you know what you want to write about. It can be about a group, a theme, a person, an event. Just make it specific and flesh out the WHOLE story before you write. Don't put pen to paper until you can see the plot play out in your mind. I wish you the best in your project, but I have written plays I am very proud of without having any clue where it was going.

No offense (the teens seem quite thin-skinned here, so I preface with the no offense line), I suggest that if honestly you cannot think of something yourself because your imagination apparently does not extend that far, then you should just skip writing a play, or anything else. If you - and all the teens - have to come here and ask these types of questions: (What should I call my story? What's a good main character name? Should I write a novel? What should I do for an ending? What disease should I have the main character die from? Where do I go from here? Is Francesca a good name for my main character who is Italian with some Irish and blue eyes, so what do you think?) then you will NEVER be able to successfully write much of anything. Writing is supposed to be an exercise in CREATIVITY, and if you have to run around asking others to do your creating for you, then you CAN'T CREATE! Hate to say it, but the guy above me got it right!

no one even knows what you want to make a play about, how do you suppose they can help you. I can give you an ending right now, make the character say "the end". Your wife is obviously right, your not that bright.

Just a thought, but if you get your ideas from other people, then how is that 'writing it yourself'? Get the ending from us, and your wife is right about the fact that you can't write it yourself.

Your wife said you write one, not us. You think of an ending.

I can't answer this question because you gave no description of what the play is about. Sorry buddy but your on your own.
