You can install the 40GB HD as a slave to the 4GB. The hard drives have two connectors, a flat ribbon cable and a 4-pin power cable. The ribbon cable will have 3 connectors, one to the IDE controller on the motherboard, one to the master hard drive, and one in the middle for a slave hard drive. See if the 40GB drive has a jumper for master/slave/cable select and set it to cable select, install it on the middle connector of the ribbon cable, and attach an unused 4-pin power cable.
