Finding a job in Houston?

I will make a 30 day trip to Houston next month. My goal is to find a job within that time frame--I hope. To give you a liitle bit of my background, I am a seasoned professional who worked mainly as an Analyst (Budget and Projects). I also double majored with degrees in Finance and Communications.

Here are my questions:

Does anyone know the job market climate in that area? Are there an abundance of jobs? If so, in what sector?

Would I be able to find a job within that time frame? If not, what would be the best thing to do to ensure a speedy employment?

Please, serious and thorough answers only.

I'm not in recruting, but have lived in Houston for awhile. From Sept. 11 through about a year ago the professional job market in Houston was tight. Within the last year, things seem to have loosened up as I am seeing a lot of movement of professionals to different companies.

    Here's some companies to try:

    Koch Industries

    Baker Hughes

    Shell Oil / Chemical

    Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR)

    AIG VALIC

    AIG American General

If it were me, I would start now, as you are doing, researching the area. When I relocated to Houston, I found a listing of the top 50 or so employers in Houston and sent resumes to all of them. I ended up sending about 3 different resumes to my current employer, but one finally hit the right desk.

I was able to get a copy of the City's classified ads from the newspaper. From remote, I started responding to Houston ads. This helped to get momentum going. The mainstream paper here is the "Houston Chronicle" the offbeat paper, but with heavy readership is the "Houston Press". I think at least the Chronicle allows you to do an online subscription, which would likely give you access to the Classifieds. Perhaps the Houston Press does this as well.

If you are interested in contracting, then there seem to be quite a few contracting jobs, particularly as it pertains to payroll and SAP installations. A friend who is a CPA has been contracting in Houston for about 3 years. She was heavy into SOX installations, but that has slowed down quite a bit. I called her and asked about the agencies that she has used. She has used "Essential Advisory" and "Sirius". I tried locating numbers/websites for them and couldn't find anything. I know someone else who has used a recruting firm for IT contracts. This firm is "Velocity IT". I couldn't find a number for them either.

Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.
