I have an '89 cavalier (very similar to the sunbird) and I have read that you can fit in just about any engine by buick, cadillac, chevy, oldsmobile, or pontiac up to a 3400 without a lot fabricating

That was your first problem. The 1992 Sunbirds were prone to water pump and blown head gasket problems.Buy a new car.

Greetings. Let me give u and advice, sell that junk. i know maybe you love it , maybe is your first car, maybe you have a lot of memories on it... but junior......let it go.......
everybody knows how cheap and crappy pontiac sunbirds where made it is the shame of general motors in fact you can see how GM is loosing market and everithing is related to bad quality, unreliable engines, troublesome electronics...etc. etc...ask an honest mechanic and he will tell the same.

The best thing you could do is maybe run to a library and they might have a Chiltons or Haynes repair manual you can make some copies of, check it out and decide for yourself, but a timing belt is a pretty involved process, not so much for a water pump.

i own a repair shop and some of the Oldsmobile's and Chevy engines would also fit right in it,you didn't tell me what size it was ,but Chevy and Oldsmobile all used the same engine, good luck i hope you find one.

I've had plenty of Pontiacs- and the last one blew the intake.

The seals are bad, supposedly because of the fumes of the anti-freeze. Yeah, whatever.
