Try this: IE7 has a feature that lets you open it "without add-ons". And this may help you troubleshoot which add-ons you had previously installed under IE6 that are somehow not working under your IE7 install.
Right click on the IE7 Desktop Icon and left click on Start Without Add-ons. If IE7 opens, then go to the Tools pull-down menu and Manage Add-ons, then to Enable or Disable Add-ons.
When you get to the Manage Add-ons Dialog Box you can start disabling, one at a time, the add-ons listed and testing out IE7 functionality each time thereafter, and thus determine if a particular add-on has been causing IE7 to hang/freeze. If the last add-on you disabled wasn't the one causing the problem, then re-enable that one and try the next one until you've disabled all the add-ons that cause IE7 to hang or freeze.
You may find that it's a couple of them. Then you'll have to use some computer savvy to determine how to fix or replace the add-ons that you disabled with newer versions so that you have an array of add-ons that give you the tools to have a fully-functional IE7.

You only need to do a search on here to see how many people are having problems with IE7. The best thing to do is download Mozilla Firefox available from http://www.mozilla.com/ Its faster, more user friendly, easily customisable to suit your needs and no problems.
