SCUBA Diving?
I'm thinking about getting certified in SCUBA diving for recreational diving. Any advice?

Others have given some good advice. Do not buy the major equipment until you are certified and have tried different types and brands. To start diving you should buy mask, fins, snorkel, booties, weight belt, and weights. Wait on everything else.
As for the instruction itself, I prefer SSI certification. They are very thorough and have standards that surpass many of the other agencies. I was initially certified by PADI but switched over to SSI once I did some research and had enough experience to recognize a better program. Regardless of which agency you go to, make sure they conform to the dive industry standards.
Diving is a blast, jump in and have fun, but be safe!

Remember that above all scuba diving is a fun and enjoyable "social " activity. When finding a dive shop to learn through, go there a few times in advance and talk to the people not only that work there but that shop or hang around there. If you do not feel comfortable with the people there you should probably look for another group. Inorder to truly enjoy scuba you must enjoy being with the other divers this will give you more outings and dives to go on when you are first learning and gaining experiance.
See if they have a dive group you can join and what type of activities and trips they plan. Also all dive agencies teach the basics to get you safely diving and by joining a agency based on merely which dive system they use i.e. PADI, SSI, TDI etc. may leave you with a group that does not share your goals for Scuba Diving.

Go for it.
Get a good instructor and who loves to dive!
See if you can do a semi-private class with 1-2 people, so you can learn the skills better and get personalized attention.
Remember, the more you learn the less chances of you killing yourself.

Spend a lot of time in the water to stay comfortable in the surroundings. I recommend the YMCA for training and certification.

Find yourself a good instructor. Ask around and talk to other divers in your area to see if you can give you any recommendations. After that, pay attention to what you are learning and then have fun.

Be carful, get your own regulator(the best money can buy) your life dependes on it. Stay calm at all times and have fun.
