Sound travels in:
gas
liquid and/or
solids
In increasing speed in that order. It is a "compression" wave of whatever medium it is traveling through. About the only thing it can NOT travel through is a vacuum. It goes about 5 times faster in water than air and even faster in most solids.

Sound is caused by pressure differences. Because of that it isn't riding on anything. It doesn't have mass but is simply a difference in density. The laser beam i assume only causes these changes in a certain area so you can only hear it there.
