The best strategy is to search for flights and hotel rates through a website, but order directly on the airline's and hotel's websites. This will save you at least 10-20 bucks or more on additional fees.

I think the best search engine is www.expedia.com. Another website www.kayak.com is pretty good too. There are others (cheaptickets.com, priceline.com, orbitz.com), but I think they show more expensive fares.

Keep in mind: when flying to NYC try to find flights landing in LaGuardia airport (LGA) and not JFK - JFK is further away and the taxi fare is far more expensive.

    Good luck!

I like site59.com. If you're able to wait and plan the trip a couple of weeks in advance you can save some bucks. try for either Newark or LaGuardia for airports...JFK is further from the city. So is Newark but you can grab a New Jersey Transit train right from the airport to Penn Station in Manhattan for $14 and the trip takes 30 minutes.

I find that you are usually best off going directly to the airline and hotel websites. I've never gotten a better airfare from any of those places than I've gotten from the airlines--and now many hotel chains are guaranteeing that the rate you get from their official online site will be the best.

okay, let me go ahead and let you know which hotels to avoid. These ARE listed on most travel sites, Hotel riverside studios, pickwick arms, mount royal, west end studios, and probably many more, most of these places advertise as tourist hotels, but are in fact for the most part, SRO's (single room occupancy hotels,) poor people in new york city live in these buildings and many of them have for years, and are now haveing to share their homes with tourists, most of these are run down, and nasty places, but it is their home none the less, I have friends that live at these places, and stayed at one by accident that is how i found out about these places, AVOID them AT ALLLLLL Costs,,,,,,, try the hotel grand union in midtown, 31st street???? i think and the herald square is really nice.

Amtrak's quite the nicest way yet regrettably it quite is particularly high priced. making use of to Stamford is an ok determination bu in the long-term it could't be a extra useful determination than Amtrak, if it quite is in simple terms one individual vacationing extraordinarily. (Like if there have been 2 people vacationing you are able to could purchase 2 Amtrak tickets, however the fee of making use of - gasoline, tolls, parking in Stamford, etc. could be tremendously lots the comparable, you are able to purely % the extra commuter rail cost ticket from Stamford-NYC). once you are going to force, then parking in Stamford and taking the commuter prepare into NYC is the absolute thank you to pass - way much less puzzling and extra much less costly than making use of and parking in huge apple. in case you commute right down to NYC often you are able to attempt it as quickly as and see if it quite is well worth it in the long-term. So i could say it could be particularly extra much less costly than Amtrak, once you're going via your self, yet in addition could not shop you any time and it quite is not as friendly as Amtrak. (Plus while you're taking Amtrak you are able to examine, do artwork, sleep, etc... all issues which you won't be in a position to do once you're making use of). additionally - in case you ever do take Amtrak - taking the Acela to NYC is honestly not quite worth the extra fee, the trains are not THAT lots nicer and it does not shop adequate time to justify the critically bigger fare. The interior of reach trains are nevertheless exciting, hehe.
