Convert each letter in the question to a number, making A=1, B=2, etc. through Z=26.
"What" becomes 23+8+1+20, thus 52
"is" becomes 9+19, thus 28
"the" becomes 20+8+5, thus 33
keep going until "this" becomes 20+8+9+19, thus 56
"sequence" becomes 19+5+17+21+5+14+3+5, thus 89
so 89 is the next number.

If you assign a number to each of the letters in the words of that sentence (A=1 up to Z=26) and add up the letters for each word, you get that sequence.
For example, What = 23 + 8 + 1 + 20 = 52
Is = 9 + 19 = 28.
So to get the last number we need to do the same for the word 'sequence': 19 + 5 + 17 + 21 + 5 + 14 + 3 + 5 = 89.
