On Mario 64 where are the switches to turn the red ? boxes? I have looked every where. What am I missing?

Go into the main hall, stand on the sun in the center of the room, and look up at the ceiling. You'll be transported to a level with a tower in the center. Use the winged cap and fly down to the tower and press the switch.
