Labor Day originally was meant to honor the rank and file worker or more precisely unionized workers. It is similar in nature to some countries 'May Day' celebrations though not all. It exists as a national holiday due to the political power of organized labor, basically , just as anything else does(emphasize political power not organized labor). At the time it was enacted a long struggle to realize and support the basic rights of the worker had been going on. The holiday being declared further legitimized and boosted Labors' power.
Alas and alack, it's now just signifies the last weekend of the season to go sailing. A note of warning: Should you hear of a so-called "Computer Day", phone your representative now and dont give up until your message has been heard by a known living person.
