Would you recommend a Compaq Laptop?

Im am in the market for a laptop and noticed a Compaq laptop at the PX yesterday. From what I remember, it has:

Windows Vista Home Basic

512 MB RAM

80 GB Hard Drive

(Forgot Processor) I think AMD Athlon

and its Wireless

I'm a little wary about getting Windows Vista, mainly because of the compatibility with alot of the programs I use and the issues I've heard people having with the audio output on it. Also, how is Compaq as a Brand? My family has had two Compaqs and they have seemed to juts burn out and slow to a crawl over time but my HP is still working as good as it did the day I bought it.

Update:

All of the PCs we have are desktops, and most importantly, I am on a budget.

Referring to a computer slowing to a crawl has to do with software, os...... You noted a symptom, but I dont believe the cause has anything to do with the computer, or hardware.....

I love my little compaq laptop, its not the fastest thing in the world, but I have not had one issue with it for 2 years now....

Now for Vista, you are very correct about the issues with hardware and software support. If you dont want to deal with the headache, try to get the computer with xp, I think you can still get the free Vista update when you purchase a computer with the xp os. This way, lets say after a year, when most of the bugs are worked out, and companies have made vista compatible drivers.....you can update free of charge......

Almost forgot, since your in the military, I would invest in a lock. I had several friends in the Navy that had their laptop stolen......

Compaq Presario CQ61-410US is great computing gadget with HD show screen, the recent domicile windows 7 so person friendly, and that i admire the prolonged keyboard - with numbers set off off to the section. i replaced into observing laptops two times the value ($six hundred-$seven hundred) once I observed this one pop up on the final sellers checklist for Amazon. the only distinction between the better value notebooks and this Compaq is that it does no longer have a webcam or 4 GB of reminiscence - it in simple terms has 2 yet is expandable to 4. you will no longer be able to get a extra effectual computer for the value $379. extra beneficial than happy with my purchase!

Yes, Compaq hardware is good. The problems you'd had in the past with slowing to a crawl is to do with the operating system software. More often than not, you are forced to purchase a license to use Microsoft Windows. The hardware itself is great. You can use alternate operating systems, such as Linux, on Compaq hardware and you won't be subject to slowdown, viruses, trojans, disk fragmentation and all those other Microsoft nasties.

well HP owns Compaq so it just depends on what you think about HP cause they both have the same internal parts (usually) as each other just different names kinda like GMC and Chevy.

but HP is a good computer way better than Dell

Compaq is made by HP so if you're happy with your HP then you'll likely be happy with your Compaq

I wouldn't recommend a Compaq, I keep hearing problems with them from my friends and plus my sisters computer is slow...I would say a Dell or Gateway....

I would suggest only get a laptop that has the core 2 duo processor. Not dual-core, core 2 duo by intel.

Whatever you get that has that processor, you will be happy with.

    GL.

I would personally go Dell if I was getting a PC based laptop. You can get them at comparative rates and will get their good support incase of issues.
