I think that he loves his country, but he's still willing to see all sides of an issue. A lot of people may be interested to know that he's also a Republican.

You respect him more because he felt we shouldn't have fought WWII either? Not me - I lost respect for him. I thought he was above the Hollywood idiocy of showing only why war is bad, but not giving any alternative solutions for what you do when someone attacks you and plans on continuing to attack even if you do nothing.
No one likes war and if everyone was willing to be reasonable there wouldn't be any. When someone declares War on you there is nothing you can do but surrender or fight back - if they have other solutions why do they keep them secret?
