It depends on what stuff you like to do...taking baths are helpful, especially if you use certain minerals mint, lavender, etc.
You can also do things like read, watch TV, and play on the computer.
If it's an anger-type of tense, I'd suggest singing or playing an instrument of some kind.

Breathe. It is seriously corny, but it works. I was really tense for a while and was actually having anxiety and insomnia from the stress. I went to a therapist, and she taught me a great breathing regimen. Sit, or lie in your most favorite place where you are comfortable, preferrably alone, or with someone who you are 100% comfortable around. Close your eyes. Think about whatever it is that is causing you to be tense and clear your mind of all other thoughts. Tell yourself to let this tense feeling roll out of your body, start with it rolling out of your fingertips. Next go to your legs, then your arms, then your chest, and your head, etc. While your mind is telling your body to let this tenseness roll out of your body, take in deep breaths through your mouth and let them out through your nose. It works for me, I hope it works for you as well. A good way to practice and get a great night of sleep is when you lie down for bed.

Depends on the situation, the best solution I find is to go for a walk; you could also just try taking deep breaths with special emphasis on exhaling all the air from your lungs with each breath.
If the cause of your stress is environmental it is best to change environment.
