I have a 1972 VW super beetle convertible.?
I want to get all the power out of my 1300cc stock motor that I can without decreasing the reliability too awfully much. I realize exhaust is a big help and am considering dual carbs but I dont know a whole lot about air-cooled engines themselves so I'm a bit stumped as to the best route to take with the 1300cc motor. If you have any ideas please let me know. Also, as far as after market heaterboxes, d they really work that much better than the originals? Being a convertible it gets somewhat cold during these Colorado winters. Thanks in advance guys!! (And Girls)
Ok... so reading the first answer I feel really stupid. It is a 1600cc, mny last beetle was 1300... bleh.. so yeah. same question with a 1600cc..go me! hah

There is a lot you can do to a stock 1600cc engine to increase the power, although its not ever gonna be Porsche like without a lot of $$$, these parts will help make it more fun. Look around when shopping for parts because prices vary.
Oh yeah these are all bolt on parts
Tune up/oil change, Bosch platinum plugs, silicone wires, cap/rotor and synthetic oil
Get a Bosch 009 distributor with an electronic ignition or the new Mallory billet distributor, these give more reliable starting - $100 to $250
Weber progressive 2 bbl carb or dual Solex carbs, these have chokes on them for easy starts when cold $200 to $350
1.25:1 rockers and solid shafts less than $150
New Empi style exhaust $50. This muffler sounds good and fits in the stock location.
As far as heat goes there are electric fan kits that go in-line with the heater boxes and increase the CFM of air into the car. There are also gas heaters available and I have seen oil coolers used with the fan blowing air through the cooler into the car. hope this helps.

A 1972 VW super beetle would have come with a 1600 cc engine if it was a U.S. car. In the U.S., the 1300 cc engine was only used in 1966. Let's say you have a 1300 cc. You can easily increase power by replacing the pistons and cylinders with those of the 1600 cc engine. They'll fit in the crankase without problems but you'll have to have the cylinder heads machined so that they fit the larger cylinders. When you do this, you gain horsepower from the increased displacement and increased compression ratio. If you do this, I recommend that you switch to premium gas.
The horsepower gain is approximately 10 horsepower. In an engine that size that' s a large increment.
For a 1600 cc engine, there's not much you can do because the factory has already done a lot. If you can take the engine apart, you can change the camshaft, use slightly larger cylinders, use headers, go to a two barrel carburator, that kind of thing.
Sonora knows. Sonora been VW tech for 15 years 1969-1984. Sonora done over 1000 engine overhauls.
