I worked in Oak Park for a few years....Lake and Oak Park Ave. The town is getting worse and worse. The crime rate is going up and peoples safety is now in jeopardy. There are punks and gangbangers out on Madison and South Blvd at night. It's a shame it once was a nice town.

Oak Park is a charming old suburb. Because it is quite close in, it has outstanding public transportation. Eight different 'L' stations are either in or on the border of Oak Park, and several city and suburban bus routes also serve the community. Metra commuter trains also serve Oak Park, providing easy access both to the city and the more distant suburbs. Oak Park itself is reasonably small and quite walkable. Getting around without a car is certainly no problem. Parking, on the other hand, can be quite a headache.

Everyone has different feelings on safety. While Oak Park is basically a wealthy, diverse suburb, it is quite close to the inner city. What's more, the same transit that provides residents with an easy commute also provides potential criminals with easy access to Oak Park. Burglary can be a problem (though it shouldn't be a major concern if you take basic precautions), and there are often a lot of homeless people near the 'L' stations. That said, in general Oak Park is reasonably safe. It's certainly safer than the neighboring parts of the city, and it's safer than many suburbs farther out.

If you're looking for an apt w/o a car make sure stores are nearby or you will be taking a Blue cab which is a little cheaper than Chgo cabs. Parking is restricted in the entire village so you will be saving high monthly parking fees. It will be spent on cabfare. Getting to the Loop is fine with either Metra or CTA trains.

East OP is not as safe as the rest of the village. That's why the rents are cheaper.

if you're concerned about safety, move by the lake where the reeeally rich people live. with their yachts, etc. or move to des plaines or schaumburg, they're the safest places in illinois. the only worst thing that's probably ever happened is some teenager getting a speeding ticket on friday night. lol
