Fostering a LARGE bird?

I am currently fostering a Cockatoo. He is a beautiful bird. However, I am having issues with his ummm SCREAMING!! I have tried talking to him when he screams.. covering etc.. nothing works... He is also a very very needy guy... want's to be on someone all the time. Ok.. not someone, ME.. and I just don't have the time to sit with him non stop.

How would you tell his real family it is time to come and get him. He was suppose to be with us for 2 weeks.. that was the first of Dec.... HELP!!! I really need him to go home, but don't want him to just end up any ole place that he may be abused.. any advice?

I had a Cockatoo for approx 7 years. Someone was abusive to him before I got him and I sorta rescued him. I wish that I had of done research on this type of bird.

I understand what you mean by screaming. They are extremely loud and it is an ear piercing scream. They are also one of the most destructive of the parrot family. They also are very demanding and they get attached to someone and it sounds like you are it.

If you decide to keep him learn about his breed. They like to chew on things, take things apart, so give them lots of parrot toys and they especially need something to chew, ours loved cut branches off of a crab apple tree, which a friend of mine would keep me stocked up on.

They like to be number 1 and they don't do well with other animals in the house, which we found out why we were having such a hard time with him because we had a cat and a dog. Which they were fine with him but he liked to chase the cat and dog and tease them. If you learn about them and have the patience they make a beautiful loyal pet.

They have to be dealt with firmly or they will throw temper tantrums, and it sounds like he is doing this on you now.

I do find it strange that you were only supposed to have him for 2 weeks and you still have him after all this time. It sounds like maybe they do not want him. Ask them and then you have to decide if you want to keep him, if not, there are places for this type of bird where they screen the people who want to buy him and they monitor them for awhile to make sure that he is properly placed. That is what we had to do, as we finally realized that we could not properly take care of him.

I wish you the best of luck and do what is the best for the Cockatoo, it sounds like you will watch out for him. Like I said they are a beautiful bird and great companion when properly trained.

Well, I am a bird owner so this should help. You make sure he has food and water, make sure there are toys in his cage. Also he might be a little cranky if he/she has not had enough sleep. To help him/her go to sleep turn off the lights or dim them. Also don't be very loud and keep the house down and not so loud. If anyone near him/her is being loud they want to do the same thing. Also if you are talking to him/her then just tell the bird he/she is a pretty bird and say shhhhhh, be quiet. If he wants to be on you all of the time and you want to do something then stay by him/her when he/she is in the cage if you have one. Also about the place to stay. If an owner dropped the bird off with you then call them. You could also run to an animal shelter or the police. The police just to tell them all about how you were supposed to have the bird for only 2 weeks etc!

Amazons get rather hormonal throughout mating season and characteristic an extraordinarily huge beak with a impressive style of muscle potential at the back of it. Cockatoos are a similar way or maybe whether it rather is quiet for its species, it probable isn't that quiet. Cockatoos even have crucial bite particularly while scared! Out of the two left, Pionus tend to be rather even tempered yet they have a wierd scent to their feathers. they're a solid bridge to a lots bigger chook. i would not be too in touch with regard to the feather injury because it rather is punctiliously fixable. pink Bellies are additionally a solid determination. Poicephalus parrots many times bond very strongly to their proprietors and a splash clowns in lots of instances loving to play on their backs. the two the pink abdomen and the pionus can stay to a minimum of 30 years of age with ideal care (like a solid pelleted nutrition plan supplemented with end result and vegetables and seed treats weekly.) solid for you desirous to undertake a chook! you've gotten an extraordinarily grateful better half on your hands!

Come straight out and tell them that it's time for him to go home.
