What do you do in the summer?

I'm aspiring to be a teacher, and I was wondering what you teachers do during the summer for employment.

I generally teach a couple of summer classes, take a couple of summer classes, and also work on the big projects that I can't make time for during the year -- writing my M.A. thesis, or revamping my curriculum, or (crossing my fingers!) perhaps writing a novel.

I know other teachers who like to refresh themselves with a non-child-oriented job; one of my friends summers as a park ranger. (:

Or you can teach a population very different from your usual -- some college professors teach classes for gifted middle schoolers, and some elementary teachers run seminars for other teachers. That's another good way to get a fresh angle on your work.

Bear in mind, though, that most schools consider you a full-time employee year-round; you get paid year-round and you might be asked to participate in planning sessions or summer school.

As a first year teacher I spent my summer preparing for the year ahead. I will do the same this summer after my Honeymoon. Our cheques are streched out to so we get paid in the summer. Not as much as during the year but enough.

Some teachers do tutoring, have a second job, prepare for the next year, or just relax. A lot of schools you can have your checks stretched out over the summer, so you still get paid.

The district may have summer school opportunities, which I used to do early in my career. Now that I have two small children, I am officially a home maker as my wife works full time.

I knew a few guys that used to work for a caterer bartending weddings and stuff like that.

    Good luck!

Some teachers tutors some weak students during summer vacation. I am one of them, I have two students to tutor them in summer.
