The highest point along the Appalachian Trail is Clingmans Dome in Tennessee - topping out at a little under 6,700 feet. "There are more than 350 peaks over 5,000 feet high along the AT, and perhaps a thousand more in the vicinity." I would think the average elevation would be relatively high considering the number of peaks in the whole chain: ~4,000 feet.
