I would explore the area and see what other martial arts schools are doing, and what kind of students you want.

If you are doing "kiddie krotty" then the best bet is to go around to schools and do demos and maybe get yourself known at local religious organizations and such and get your name known among the moms- they are of course the ones sending thier little brats to a martial arts class to be free of them for an hour a week.

Like companies that sell pet food- the dogs don't look at cute animal pictures on the can- that is to entice owners.

if you are looking at an older group, then what is the intensity of your martial art training. If you are going to be teaching point sparring with light contact and not very intense training you want to attract people who want to think they can fight, but actually don't want to put in the effort to learn how.

I would look at the demographics and what works there.

For a school that is fighting oriented and interested in producing fighters you need to look at the area as well. If you are doing that, flyers, free introductory classes and internet demos might work.

Throw up a sparring demo on youtube if nothing else.

If you are wondering on a marketing plan after signing a lease and looking at who you will attract, you made a big mistake business wise.

you should have thought of these things first.

Mailings can work. Hold a seminar for an hour or two on the weekends and charge little or nothing.

Hold free self-defence classes through different sources.

To build goodwill for instance you might want to do a free seminar for rape-crisis victims and look up rape victems organizations. You will build good will and people from the seminar will sign up if they like you.

Ask a school to give the information to their students. See if you can get some sponsors, and if you can, you will be able to afford better advertisement. Once you make enough money, you will be able to, say, do a commercial on TV, or multiple commercials on the radio. That way, you will get new business, which makes more money, which provides for more advertisement.

Create some fliers or something and distribute them to surrounding businesses. You can also hire people to place them on doors in surrounding neighborhoods or on cars in nearby parking lots for relatively cheap. Maybe you can offer some kind of free mini-lesson to increase interest. Just a few suggestions.

If you have a PC, just print some flyers on Word and ask store owners about displaying them. You might also want to try talking to local school administrators and see what response you get from them about putting out flyers for students.
