What are 3 reasons the study of our planet is important, adn how might you explain these to little kids?

Our planet is unique in that, as far as we know, it is the only one supporting life. The reason why Earth is able to support life is because it is tectonically active. The movement of the tectonic plates across the surface of the earth generates the atmosphere we breathe and the water we drink. Tectonic forces help control the transfer of heat from the core of the earth to the surface. It influences the flow of oceans, which intern influences the flow of the air creating winds. These winds carry moisture to different regions of the planet. Virtually everything you see in front of you right now is a result of some kind of mining. Most of the chemistry used today is the result of the study of crystal structures of rock forming minerals.

The government should invest in Geologic study because geology is more than just the study of rocks and soil. It is the study of the planet earth, the materials that make up the planet, the processes that create and act on these materials, the products formed by these forces, and the history of the planet and the life forms that life or have lived on it, since its origin. Geologists study the atmosphere, the forces that created the atmosphere and the forces acting on the atmosphere. Geologists study the oceans, the forces that created the oceans, and the forces acting on the oceans. The same is true about the ice caps, glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, flooding, crop growth, acid rain, and pollution in the air, water, and soil. If you take all the earth sciences, climatology, paleontology, archeology, oceanography, volcanology, environmental studies, and roll them all up, you end up with a Geologist.

I am working on my Masters in Geology. Every one of the topics I mentioned above are classes I have or still have to take. I also have taken Petrology, Mineralogy, Mapping, Geo-Chemistry and computer programming and modeling.

The best thing about Geology is, I get to travel. I am going to the Bahamas next month to study the coral reefs. I am going to Yellowstone this summer to do some mapping. I am working in Baja on my thesis. I have been in mines a mile deep and on mountaintops 14,000 ft tall all in the same day. Tell the kids, if they want adventure and the chance to solve the problems plaguing the world, then study geology.

Kids have different interests, so point out to them how proper care of our planet benefits their daily lives. For example, they see flowers and trees - these are kept healthy by having good air and clean rain and help us all breathe clean air. Have them think about how hard it would be to breathe smokey air. They like to eat - bring in stalks of wheat and some flour (or corn and cornmeal) to explain how it gets from the farmer's field into the macaroni. Encourage them to recycle drink bottles and cans - start a collection in the classroom. The zoo animals can be used to show how endangered species are threatened by over use of land, too much building, and clearing away of trees. Those kids will be able to think about a place where grass and trees used to be there and now it's a parking lot. Which one is more fun?
