Any aspiring jazz trumpet players out there and, if so, who are YOUR idols? Where do YOU hail from?

Well, I defer this to my teenage son who is in a jazz band and a coronet and trumpet player (plus tons of other instruments).
His idol is Duke Ellington (of course), first and formost. But, he also threw in there one of his own previous teachers "Mr. McPhethrage."
We are in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas

my boyfriend's a jazz trumpet player, i don't know his idols ( never asked him) and he hails from ramsey, new jersey
