Why is it that teaching is such an underrated profession?

I've noticed that the kind of abuse that high school teachers are submitted to on a daily basis does not seem to be justified by their paycheck. I wonder if teaching rewards or raises or bonuses were consciously omitted from the No Child Left Behind legislation. Any ideas?

Update:

Helen, as the spouse of a teacher, I know all about districts and masters. I was more interested in people's opinions of societal views. Since you yourself will be a teacher, i will tell you this much: Do not even dream that your schooling prepares you to deal with the boatloads of work that teaching involves. Aside from the actual instruction (8hrs a day)there is the prep and grading to be done outside of the classroom. Teaching goes in cycles, but the amount of work is not commesurate to the pay, regardless of the district.

Update 2:

Fuji, the difference is that when fast food workers go home for the day, THEY ARE DONE. They don't have to go and grind the beef for the burgers, or bake the bread forthe buns, or grow the potatoes for the fires. Teachers, on the other hand, have to grade, file, plan ahead, and continue with their own education so that they don't lag behind.

As for the three months of vacation, you would need them too if you worked fifteen hour days every day for nine months straight. If you took the actual pay and divide it out by the actual hours worked, it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of fast food jobs. And, these are men and women who hold bachelors and masters degrees.

Teaching's become so underrated because of people like the first person to answer. No one has any respect for teachers anymore, and it doesn't help that they've lost all their rights becuase of the law you stated above. I don't know if they were specifically omitted, but I do know that teacher salaries, etc depends more on the district rather than anything else. Also raises and salary levels also depend on the level of education a teacher has. I know in my home district, a teacher with a masters degree will have a higher pay raise than one without.

And I just realized I may not have answered your question, but I hope it helps to finding the answer. But teaching is a cycle, and hopeflly soon, it will return to the time when people respect their teachers and there won't be this problem.

Teaching isn't underrated. If anything, it is ridiculously OVERRATED! We are talking about a bunch of whining, underachieving, undereducated (in anything worthwhile), socialist battle axes hellbent on squeezing every last nickel out of John Q. Taxpayer by screaming "for the children, for the children" every time anyone brings up the possibility of slowing spending on schools that haven't educated anyone since compulsory attendance was implemented. I am personally looking forward to the day when I can afford to buy an island so I don't have to pay taxes for a bunch of nitwits to indoctrinate the children of my neighbors who are too stupid to home school. I have seen NO evidence that justifies the inflated salaries & benefits these parasites have managed to arrange for themselves. If I didn't have any skills, I'd definitely be signing up for that racket!

Teachers complain alot about their pay but believe it or not it really isnt that bad considering they HAVE THREE MONTHS OFF FOR THE SUMMER AND THEY HAVE EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY OFF AND EVERY HOLIDAY AND DID I MENTION THE TWO WEEKS OFF FOR WINTER BREAK AND ALSO THE ONE WEEK FOR THE EASTER BREAK? And I believe they also have vacation time and sick leave.

They have to put up with student but some arent bad and some teachers become friends with them. In the REAL WORLD everyone gives other people (excuse my language) sh*t no matter what. Fast-food workers are unpaid and they put up with (excuse my language) sh*t and dont have all those days off. Not just them educated people as well. So to anyone who reads this- become a teacher and if you think the money isnt that great you can always have another job to make up for it since you WILL have three months off and extra time off during school.
