why is it when you buy a train ticket, it says single how do they know youre single

No, no, no, that's not what it means. When "single" is written on a train ticket, it means that the ticket is valid for a single journey, in other words, just one way without returning.
They have no idea what your marriage status is.

I suppose the cartoon bloke on the Lloyds TSB advert had to pay a surcharge on his ticket considering he's married by the time he gets off.

"Single" is a term used in railway jargon to state "One Way" if it says "Return" or "Round Trip" then it is a Round Trip.
