How can you avoid Tartar build-up on your teeth?

I really dislike going to the dentist as my teeth are sensitive and even with an injection I always feel the drilling for a filling etc. I always brush really well and take care of my teeth but I still manage to get a build-up of Tartar that has to be scraped off by the Hygenist and although I can cope with the powered tools she uses on most of my teeth she has to do some of them by hand because of my sensitivity. Why does the Tartar happen? What can I do to avoid it? And why are my teeth so sensitive?

Use a pre-rinse mouth wash so it breaks up the plaque before you brush and you can brush more off. There are toothpastes for extra sensitive teeth you may want to try, and find a dentist that will use gas instead of novacaine. Some people it just doesn't work on, trust me i'm one of them.

To help avoid tartar build up you should brush your teeth at least twice a day with a tartar control toothpaste.

SoniCare Toothbrush! Pricey (about $100) but well worth it - I have used it about 5 years now and my cleanings are so much easier. My teeth and gums are much healthier. It is the best toothbrush on the market, hands down!

I also have a problem with tarter buildup. My hygienist told me to use Colgate Total because it is the only tooth paste that contains Triclosan which is effective in reducing Tarter. It does seem to help in my case. Floss well and a good electric tooth brush like the sonic ones seem to help also.
