I have no idea where you live, but in the social security death index, I find over 1200 persons with that last name. Just to guessitimate, if 1/2 are women, that might be a married name.

As for the nationality of a name.. that can be SO misleading, since people of the same name can have lived in many different places. And to the surprise of many, people with the same last name are NOT always biological relatives. I know there are tons of sites out there that shows origins and meanings, but I honestly don't see those as being of much use in finding out your OWN heritage.

Yes.. many "rare" names are corruptions, so to speak. Sometimes they get entered into old records, as the clerk "heard" them, and that is what got passed down. I have several in my personal research.

In terms of reliable background on your family history, you need to look at individuals, and the documented records available for them. If you have a Kittrell gr grandmother/ father, the key is finding which of them was the immigrant ancestor, and where they come from. That is assuming you live in the US. If you do, your first stop might be rootsweb.com, click on searches, and look for family members in that file. It includes deaths back to the mid 1960's.

Another favorite place is www.cyndislist.com, that literally has thousands of resources. There are beginning research tutorials, these are important. Trying to jump from "today" to the first instance of the name can just give you broad information, and not reliable at that.
