VPN vs private WAN?
My business has three locations in our state. Each location is at least 200 miles apart.
Currently each branch office has a point to point t1 to the main office through which ALL voice and data traffic is routed. We have two ISP connections which are load-balanced at the gateway of our main office.
What are the risks of implementing a VPN in place of our current topology?

VPN assumes that you're running over a public network as a reslt, all packets are encrypted which will slow traffic down considerably. I do have a similar setup to you with 2 locations only and I have implemented point to point T1 because it works very well once you set it up.
Thanks,

As stated above, VPN generally uses the public internet. While cheaper there are usually no service level agreements to guarantee uptime or bandwidth. Your private WAN is probably through a single provider so you have one point of contact when there are problems. Switching to an internet based VPN you will be forced to use the local providers in each location. That can cause headaches when problems arise.

in your set up, you are in great shape, the only issue is that some time you may need to check to make sure you still have adequate bandpass should the number of employees grow or if you are moving more data intensive information.
You would want to use a vpn if you needed to have employees connect to your wan from outside the physical company, say from home or a clients site. then they could use the internet to connect.

Depending on your budget as well. Leasing a T1 line is quite costly. If you implement your VPN well, then it's not that bad.
