It sounds like your dog is having a great time playing "keep away"!
If she gets out and you have to get her back in an emergency, call her name in a happy voice and run away from her. Her natural instincts should kick in and she will most likely chase you. When you catch her, don't scold her, just put her back.
To train her try the following:
First thing, remember, you are the human and you are in charge of everything your dog needs and wants, food, walks, shelter, toys, etc. Now use these things to your advantage!
To train her, first bring her outside on a 50 ft long leash (called a long line -available at any pet supply place). and anytime she goes a little too far away from you, step on the long line (tie knots in the line for easier stepping) and call, "Fido, Come!" in a high happy voice. If she comes, THROW THAT DOG A PARTY!!! Lots of praise and really yummy treats that she never gets at any other time (baby food - I use Gerber Stages One and it comes in chicken, turkey, veal etc., or use chicken, salami, hot dog, cheese, etc) If she isn't food motivated, use a ball or a toy. Then tell her, "Okay, go play!" and let her go. Keep doing this exercise and pretty soon she is going to learn that coming to you is the absolute best thing in the whole world!
If she does come the first try, gently pull the leash and make her come to you - then treat and tell her, "Go Play!" and then repeat the above.
Never, at this stage in the game, call her for something yucky like leaving the park, a bath, etc. When it is time to go, step on the long line and go. Never yell at her in an angry voice to come and never, ever punisher her when she finally does come - would you want to go to someone who was mad at you?
Good luck!

If you keep your dog outside all the time they get bored. My suggestion is make your dog a part of the family. Bring it inside 90% of the time. When it goes outside in the yard let it do its business and then either play fetch with it or bring it back in. Your dog is begging for your attention. I had a yellow lab that did the same things. But when I was older I realized that this is all he wanted and from that point on he never ran again. I would also suggest going to a training class.
WHATEVER you do don't listen to Chicago17 or anyone who claims to be a trainer(in an answer to another question) that says it is okay to hit your dog.
She suggests beating it and tying it up. WELL let me let you in on a little secret a dogs short term memory last only about 3 seconds. So if the dog escapes and you bring it back home and then punish it he does not know why you are punishing. Tying the dog up would only make it worse too. If you really were a trainer you would know that. Sorry people like that just make me livid.
You should also take the dog for long walks. Labs are a high energy dog that requires lots of exercise. I used to make jumps and hurdles in my back yard and teach my dog to go through a make shift agility trial.
You can find a place in your area that will help you train your dog in agility. You have lots of options with your dog. It is up to you weather you just give up or you stick with your commitment and do what ever is possible for your dog.
You made a commitment to that dog to love it and cherish it for the rest of its life when you got the dog. Be true to it PLEASE.
The people that are lazy and give up on their dogs are the reason why shelters are so full.
PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR DOG.

stop trying to chase after her she will come back =) and she'll be waiting at your front porch to be let back in.. is she spayed? This could be one reason she is running off and wont come back... I had the SAME problem with my female german shepherd, she also knew how to jump over the fence and one day the pound came and got her.. once she does come back dont show any aggression or any negative nor positive attention... you will probably need to take her to some doggy classes that will have her come when called no matter what the situation... I hope this was helpful!!!!!!!

if all else fails, drive a car around and scare it into going back to your house. I also have an out of control dog that refuses to enter once it goes outside so i just chase it with my car until i gets tired of running away from it. chase it down and rev the engine to frighten the poor thing then follow it with your car, don't run it over of course or else 4 hours was a waste of time

Sounds very similay to my 15 month old Shocolate Lab :). Actually we hired a trainer to come to the house and work with us and he is WAY better!! For the immediate, even though it's snowing, you HAVE to exercise him on a leash. When I don't exercise him he likes to get something in his mouth he isn't supposed to have (like a napkin) and run around the house from us. Unfortunately this took a lot of time to teach.
See if you can get her to come for a biscuit for the immediate problem. Good luck!

sounds like maybe you should give her up. labs are very difficult dogs. high strung and need a lot of room to run. I found the best way to get one of my dogs when she ran off was to get in the car they loved car rides. would jump right in. my neighbor does the same thing. see her take off in the car and come back in 1 minute with the dog. one of my other dogs i have to make a game out of it and get her to chase me. tell her she is a good girl then I can catch her. I really like my other 3 they don't leave my feet and don't need a leash never have to worry about them going anywhere. one was just outside the gate this morning found her out there trying to find a way in. I didn't know she had gotten out thank god it was her.

Call her nicely and don't walk to her. Maybe use some of her favorite treats. If she sees that you're happy she'll come. When you catch her, if you want, I'll email you instructions for border training so she won't get out again. I have a black lab.

Is she in a dangerous area? IE: cars, lots of neighbors, city, etc?
If not, let her run. She'll be back when she is hungry.
If you want her back in the house, say some of her favorite words like (my dogs favorites...) "wanna go bye bye in the car" "who wants cookies" ...
that tends to work with mine when he gets loose.
Good Luck!
