Can I drink alcoholic beverages while taking cephalexin 500?

My CVS container does not say I shouldn't, I'm curious to know if I can.

Update:

This is an antibiotic to prevent infection (no infection being treated).

For many years, physicians and pharmacists were telling folks to avoid beverage alcohol while taking antibiotics, especially penicillin derivatives and cephalosporins, which is the family cephalexin (Keflex) belongs. This was based on studies of soldiers taking antibiotics and then drinking. It was discovered that their infections were not improving. It was discovered years later than no interaction had actually occured, but that the soldiers weren't taking their antibiotics as prescribed!

A drink or two with cephalexin isn't going to interact, but moderation is the key. Too much alcohol and your body's ability to fight off infection is lowered, which defeats the purpose of taking an antibiotic in the first place.

    I hope this helps.

Best thing to do is call your Pharmacists, they have a big book of things that tells you what drugs you shouldn't take while on another drug.

If it is a pain medication, anti-depressant, or muscle relaxant, then do not drink any alcoholic beverages. You run the risk of Respiratory Depression, which will cause you to stop breathing.

Check the bottle, it will specifically tell you what not to take with this drug.

There is no warning on the label, and in moderation, most professionals say it is okay.

You can't take alcohol with any medication, even non-prescription. Alcohol impairs the liver's ability to handle drugs.
