Can I use American electrical devices in Tokyo?

My wife is going to Tokyo and wants to bring her curling iron. The power there is 100 or 120v AC at 50hz. I know if you use a 50hz appliance in the US it will burn up. If she tries to use a US device there will it let the smoke out, or will it just be less hot?

I have been living in Japan for over 15 years and all the smaller electrical devices I brought are fine. The computer I brought back in 93' burned out though. Yes, flared prong plugs won't work in standard Japanese outlets, nor will tri-prong plugs unless you have an outlet stick or a two prong converter with the wire ground.

Battery chargers do take a little longer, but if you leave it over night, you won't notice the difference.

    Enjoy your trip!

If the device has the flaired prong on the plug you cannot use it in Japan...it will burn up. You need a step down voltage converter. If the device has 2 straight, unflaired prongs, it should be ok to use in Japan.

I have been living in Japan for 2 years. My electrical devices work just fine. Don't worry.

Surprisingly yes. The current and plugs are the same.
