Common Rail Diesel Injection. This is a diesel engine that injects the fuel in a more efficient way than older engines.

Does the CRDi engine sex up a car? Add to Clippings

You brag your petrol version, which just purrs, has a sharp pick-up and a trouble free engine. Fuel economy can be a concern but you prefer petrol over diesel any day.
Not any more...certainly when a diesel engine gives 30 per cent more power, an unmatched mileage and to add more they are 20 per cent cheaper than convectional diesel engines.
Can this be true?
Yes, with Indian diesel cars now powered by CRDi you need to think again before deciding on the car of your choice.
It’s called the Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi). This is the latest technology for diesel engines — suitable both for passenger cars or commercial vehicles. CRDi is the new state-of-the art diesel technology and is largely being used on premium cars worldwide. CRDi engine is already available in some models in India.

Putting it simply, in a CRDI engine, instead of the air/fuel mixture being injected into a precumbustion chamber, or directly into the cylinder, it is taken into the cylinder through a very high pressure "Rail". This high pressure and multible injections during the cycle make the diesel engine a lot smoother, more powerful and higher revving. Also much more economical to run as compared to a conventional diesel engine.

the abbreviation of CRDi engine is Common Rail Diesel Engine which is used by most of the car companies to maintain the environment standards as well as to increase fuel economy by more fuel combustion and also to increase the power output .

Common rail direct fuel injection is a modern variant of direct injection system for diesel engines. It features a high-pressure (1000+ bar) fuel rail feeding individual solenoid valves, as opposed to low-pressure fuel pump feeding pump nozzles or high-pressure fuel line to mechanical valves controlled by cams on the camshaft. Third generation common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for even greater accuracy, with fuel pressures up to 180 MPascal / 1800 bar.
The diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine. It is a compression ignition engine, in which fuel ignites as it is injected into the combustion chamber. By contrast, in gasoline engines, fuel is mixed with air first and then ignited by a spark plug. Diesel engines have a compression ratios high enough to achieve compression ignition, whereas gasoline-burning Otto cycle engines, compression ignition is undesirable.
The engine operates using the Diesel cycle named after German engineer Rudolf Diesel, who invented it in 1892 based on the hot bulb engine and received the patent on February 23, 1893. Diesel intended the engine to use a variety of fuels including coal dust and peanut oil. He demonstrated it at the 1900 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) using peanut oil.
