you have to understand that MP3s can be of high quailty, or low quality, or anywhere inbetween.
the higher quality a single MP3 song is, the more space it will take up, but the better, and less glitchy, and less monotone it will sound.
the lower the quailty of a single MP3 song, the less room it will take up on your 2GB ipod, but the crumbier it will sound. be aware!
many MP3 players automaticly shrink your MP3s so that you will have the best sound, but the smallest size MP3 possible. while i'm not sure if iTUnes does this or not, you could look into it and see. sony MP3 players do this, because instead of iTunes, they use Sonic Stage. its very similar to iTunes, but as iTunes is always compatible with all MP3s, some companies like Sony, have to make their own programs.
most people like to say each song averages out to a megabite per song. i can tell the difference if my MP3s are shrunk down to 1MB, and i like to say, on average, that my songs should be from anywhere between 1.5 MBs, and 2MBs. (MegaBites), a couple of months ago, a set of headphones came out on the market that were so sensitive, you could actually hear the difference, between music being played on a CD player, and an MP3. these headphones were $300 retail.
there are programs you can use to srink your MP3s, but they are complicated, and very few are free. the MP3 shrinker programs that are free, are often poorly designed, and i cannot recomend to you a good one.
if you want to see how big some of your favorite MP3s are, go into your music folder, or wherever you keep all of your MP3s stored on your computer, and right-click on one of them. a list should come up under your mouse, asking you what you want to do with the file you just right-clicked on. go down to the very bottom, and you should see an option that says "properties". click "properties" and wait for a window to pop up. the slower your computer, the more time this window might take to show up. give it some time, as pentium 3 computers do often take up to 30 seconds to bring your properties information up on a single file.
you should see the following:
Type of file:
Opens with:
Location:
Size:
Size on disk:
now pay attention to the little number that comes after "Size:"!!
(size on disk doesnt really matter most of the time)
if it says something like "938 KB" the "KB" means killobite, and that means your song is smaller than a single megabite.
that also means if you had 264 songs the exact same size, and you liked them all, you could fit every single one of them on your iPod, and STILL have room leftover.
