Decent computer.
Cubase SE 3 $150 (software)
Alesis IO2 $150 (interface)
M-Audio StudioPro 3 $100 (monitors)
Alesis 3630 $100 (compressor/gate)
MXL 990 $60 (condenser mic)
Shure sm57 $100 (dynamic instrument mic)
Shure PG drum mic set (if needed) $400
mixer with atleast 8 XLR inputs if you're going to need to record drums. $200 (or so)
Total (not counting cables) = $1200 (roughly)
and a few good books on mic techniques and such, and you'll get some decent quality recordings.
