Most of today's so called wood is actually composite, and treated with an acrylic based sealer. If it is wood then the sealer may just be an acrylic stain and or polymer based. All in which is water based! You should read on the can what to use and not use with the product. Try a 409 type product to get rid of the black stain.

are you sure that it is real wood on the arms? you may be just removing the paint or artificial finish from some other kind of material. Its always best to test new cleaners on a small hidden area before using the full out on the whole thing.
The only thing i can think of for the black streak is to try some old fashioned soap and water and see if that helps.
