Sometimes this works, but you need to know how to access your router's IP address. Default might be. 192.168.1.1 or similar. Hopefully yours is not still set to default settings as anyone who is close enough to access your access point can screw around with the settings. If they have you can always hit the reset button on the back of the router for a few seconds.
Once in, you would go to Status tab and do an IP Release, then a Renew. This should make your connection more stable.
An alternative would be to bring up the Command Prompt and type in ipconfig /release. After several moments do: ipconfig /renew.
From the website listed below, I found this as well:
<Disable Wireless Zero Configuration on Windows XP
If you are on Windows XP, I highly recommend that you disable the “Wireless Zero Configuration” service as well. By disabling this service, I noticed a huge improvement in the short “drops” of wireless connectivity I was getting with the service enabled. With this service disabled, I can have an active FTP session (or any other connection-oriented session running) overnight where previously the connection would drop periodically. For complete documentation on how to disable this service, visit this Pain in the Tech article.>
I hope this may help you.

You might want to see if your router is overheating. Often, when the components get too hot, they'll stop working correctly. Make sure there's adequate ventilation around the router (don't stack papers or stuff on or around it).
I know of some people who have drilled holes into the case of their router to increase ventilation (and some who have attached fans to the outside as well, see link below), but you should probably take the case apart before you do any drilling so you don't damage the components inside.
You didn't mention what brand of router you have, but Netgear seems to be notorious for running hot.

Try the normal things like power cycling the router and see if this fixex problem. It probably won't. Check the power supply, does it drop power to the router. If so then replace the power supply. If it continues to do this after power cycling and checking the power supply, you may have to shop for a new router. I hope this helps.

some good innovations above. additionally, i like first of all some common issues to boot. have you ever rebooted all units? only ought to make optimistic. i've got seen the place some instantaneous routers choose this periodically. How are you "connecting to the community" in case you are able to no longer hook up with the instantaneous gadget? you ought to purchase new instantaneous card for laptop - if that fixes it than you be attentive to the place your problem become, if it would not, return it (make certain you verify the shops "re-stocking" fee agreements, return coverage, etc.). Or, attempt to borrow from a pal or different laptop in case you have yet another card. As stated above, attempt to narrow down what isn't working.

If it does appear to be the router that is at fault, a firmware upgrade (if available) from the manufacturer website may help
