In order for the blogbaba to back up the claim that Duran had as much heart as any boxer who ever laced up the gloves, I am going to have to explain the "No Mas" fight in a manner that most have over looked. It is easy to dismiss Duran as a quitter for refusing to chase Ray around the ring anymore, until you understand Duran's mindset at the time.

Roberto said "No Mas" out of contempt for Ray, not out of any feeling of desperation or defeatism. Duran considered Ray's tactic of jabbing and running or flurrying and running an act of cowardice on Leonard's part lacking in machismo or manly art, and beneath the dignity of a warrior such as Duran though of himself to be. Was Roberto frustrated, yes, but he was frustrated at Ray's refusal to fight him "like a man" instead of running away after a quick jab like a scared rabbit. In Duran's mind he actually believed he was somehow punishing Ray and showing his contempt for Ray's tactic by ending the fight prematurly, he didn't consider the possiblity of anyone even questioning his machismo, and didn't consider the fall out from the media after uttered those famous words. Duran's "No Mas" statement did not show lack of heart in the traditional sense of quitting, it was in fact an offensive manauver in Duran's mind, it showed an overwhelming sense of arrogance and self importance on the part of Duran, but not a lack of heart. Obviously if was a mistake, but more than anything else it was a media circus, primarily because Duran was the least likely fighter of his time to "quit" like that.

Joe is much easier to defend, because the choice to end the fight in the 14th round against Ali was not made by Joe. Eddie Futch stopped the fight, and Joe was actually trying to rise for the last round when Eddie saw something in his fighter that caused the decision. That fight would have killed lesser men, and there was no dishonor in Futch stopping it, it was that brutal.

Both Frazier and Duran had "heart" and more, they were poor choices to use as examples of heartless fighters.

Both Michael Carbajal and Diego Corralas defined "heart" in the lesser weight classes, as did Barrarra and Morales with their storied careers.

Middle weights Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns earned the respect of all boxing with 9 minutes of pure heart. As did Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta in the era before.

As heavy weights go Ali and Louis had plenty heart, but none in recent memory exemplified heart the way Evander Holyfield has in his career. It is Evanders heart, not his pride or his greed that currently endangers his health with his latest attempt to regain the heavyweight title for a record 5th time.

Keith this is a really good question sir! First of all, anyone that steps in that ring has heart. Duran did quit against Leonard as he just didn't feel good and knew he was going to lose. The public gave him a very hard time about it too. He later showed a lot of heart against Hagler and against Barkely. Frazier always had a lot of heart and courage in the ring and the only reason he didn't come out for the last round vs Ali was because his manager told him not to. Joe was ready to go out there even though he was really beat up. My choice of fighters with great hearts would be as follows:

Heavyweight: Marciano, Holyfield

Middleweight: LaMotta, Basillio

Lgt Heavy Saad Muhammad, Archie Moore

Lightweight: Chacon, Mancini

First, the fighters whom I think possessed big fighting hearts are Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield (heavyweight), Jake LaMotta (middleweight) and Ray Leonard (welterweight). As to your follow-up question, I think Duran had heart too. It's just that as a fighter the guy was oozing with machismo that he'd rather quit in a fight rather than get an embarrassing beating. That's what happened in the "no mas" fight. But Duran showed a lot of heart in pushing Hagler to the limit during their bout. As to Joe Frazier's third fight with Ali, it is well-documented that Frazier desperately wanted to continue despite being unable to see Ali's punches coming for the last two rounds or so. It was his trainer Eddie Futch who, in an act of humanity, called a halt to the fight to prevent further or, worse, permanent damage to Joe Frazier.

First, anybody who can step in the ring has heart. I'm sure you've heard that before but its true. How can you say Frazier didn't have heart? Have you seen his first fight with Foreman. If he didn't have heart he would've stayed down. He got up 6 times. Plus most undefeated guys fold when they start losing. He was good mentally coming into that fight and showed alot of heart but it was no match for Foremans punching power. Did you see Fraziers eye in the Thrilla in Manila? He was smart for staying on that stool. Duran had heart, he was a great fighter and will forever be haunted by the infamous "no mas" situation. Like someone already said, Duran seen the situation entirely different than most people.

Some fighters with alot of heart would be Arturo Gatti, Micky Ward, Diego Corrales, George Foreman (In his comeback), & Evander Holyfield.

One display of heart im sure no one will never forget was James Douglas on the night of the Tyson fight. Nobody could've beat him that night he was not going to lose to Tyson. Pure heart in that fight and no heart in his next one.

Every boxer has heart when stepping into the ring. Whether they quit or continue is determined by courage.

they had heart but they had bodies and or minds that quit on them or corners to save them from themselves. to answer the other part of your question... mikey ward, aurturo gatti, eric moralles and marco antonio barrera, and cant forget diego coralles and jose luis costillo. also if you happen to see any of their fights (all fought more than once against eachother) you will agree.
