should i change my career?

i recently got hired as a cocktail watress. last night i had two customers who ordered drinks and an appetizer. after the appetizer they ordered another round of drinks and dinner right as i was going to get their food my customers came up to the bartender and asked if they could pay because their waitress (me) was ignoring them and they were so mad they wanted to leave right now. i was still waiting on the round of drinks they ordered because the bartender was too busy taking shots with her customers to fill my drink order. so the customers ended up leaving without paying a cent towards their bill. any advise? when you are at a restaurant do you want your waitress to constantly come by and check on you like ever 5 minutes or so? my boss called me today and said i can't have any more complaints or i'm going to be fired but the sad thing is i love my job and i didn't think i was doing anything wrong. what should i do?

Update:

i have nine tables and most nights they are all full most of the time and today when my boss called me she said this was not my first complaint

let the customer know the situation. however you will always get idiot customers that have no manners. they probably planned it out in order to skip the bill. people do all sorts of things to get free stuff. If it mwas your first complaint then blow it off and if your boss threatened to fire you over your first complaint then their a very bad boss and start looking for a new job, because why would you want to work for an abusive boss. you will quickly stop loving your job if you always have to worry about your azz hole boss go some where else.

That's the business! You are dealing with the public, remember! The customer is always right, which stinks. You can bend over backwards for many and they still will find fault. Sorry , it's just that way. You need thick skin for that job. Cocktail waitress is a fast moving job! If you are a laid back kind of gal , nothing wrong with that~ maybe you should find something else.

I, being in the business like to see every 5 minutes my wait staff to walk by their tables. Just to let the guest know that they are there. You don't have to stalk them, it takes awhile to learn the tricks.

I would say if you love your job, hang in there and give it some time.

  • next time tell the customers the bar is busy. Also yes check on them. You may not want to go to the table but jus watch from a far.

Go to the table greet them. Ask about drinks. Bring drinks back and take food order. While waiting on the food, refill drinks or ask them if they need anything. Then serve the food and check on them from time to time as you serve other tables. Its not hard and if you need help tell someone. Other waitresses will help most of the time.

When I waited tables, I kept a close eye on my tables to survey where they were in their dining experience.

Some customers are jerks and will act badly no matter what kind of service you deliver.

    Others are more tolerant.

If you see the bartender popping shots, you should tell the manager. Believe me, he would roll on you if his job depended on it.

When waiting for drinks, go back to the customer and let them know that they are being prepared. Then, go to the kitchen and see where your order stands. If it is not ready, then let them know that it is being prepared. do not tell them a minute or two, but that it should be coming up shortly.

Then go back to the bar.

Depending on where you work, you should always be visible to your clients so that they can garner your attention quickly.

Repeat this cycle and you should do well.

I used to get accused of being too attentive, so you have to be close, but not hovering.

It will be harder when you are busy, but not impossible.

Source(s): I loved waiting tables. It was a great juggling act. I never had a walkout.

It may be the place. Try getting another job BEFORE you get fired from this one. If you still get complaints then you are not cut out to be a server. It is hard for me to say what you are doing wrong without seeing you in action. I know how frustrating it is waiting on drinks from a slow bartender, but I doubt that is your only problem. You may not be able to multi task. Good luck.

you should've told the bartender to do her job and get your drinks, tell the super that.and yes,i like to be checked on like every 10 min, just in case,i don't want to wait on anything, a "everything ok?" in passing is sufficient. sounds like your customers were being pricks tho, you'll get those.
