Same 98 Malibu with fuel guage problem.?

i own a repair shop and i,ll tell you how to get it to go back down to where it should be,turn the key on and pull the fuse for the gages while they key is on the hand will fall,and then cut the key off,and then install the fuse back in it for the gages i have had the same problem before,that should re-set it ,good luck.
