Knowledge about Akitas?
I have a 15 month old male (fixed) that every time we have visitors he mauls them, not being aggressive, but just jumping up on them. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but I can't seem to get his attention off of them. Any suggestions?

"You will need the help of a friend for this one. Have a friend come over with some treats. Before your friend arrives put the dog on a leash so that he can be controlled. When your friend comes into the house, give the dog the sit command. When your dog sits, have your friend give him a treat. Repeat several times, and with several different people, until the dog stops trying to jump on them."

Try making him sit before they come in and make the visitors go to him first while you have ahold on him and let them pet him and then continue, but before you go to do what you are going to do give him a treat if he behaved and that will eventually show him that if he is calm your friends will come to him. This worked with my old Akita so it maybe work with yours. Just trying to help.

If you could afford it, I would send him to obedient school. They train dogs in no time. I had a dog like that, but she was the type that would have flunked out of obedient school. But we loved her to death.
