Just bought our first home; should we add in stainless steel appliances?

My husband and I just purchased our first home. It currently has a newer almond fridge, a VERY old burgandy wall oven w/ countertop burners, and an older black dishwasher. We plan on taking out the wall oven and countertop burners and replacing them with a regular stove, and possibly purchasing a new dishwasher later. Now the question is, what finish should the stove be? We don't plan on living in this house more than ten years at the absolute maximum (probably closer to five). The fridge is so new, it seems like a waste of money to buy a new one. So should we buy an almond finish stove, and later a matching dishwasher? From watching many home improvement shows, I know stainless steel appliances add value to the home, but it's not worth a whole lot (we live in the middle of Missouri and are paying $110k for a 1700 sq. ft. home) and I wonder if putting them in would be upgrading the home too much for the neighborhood. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Don't forget that Stainless adds perceived value NOW, because it's in style. In 5 years time, the stainless fad could well be over, and the extra money you spent will not offer you much return. Plus, stainless or not, if they are 5 to 10 years old when you sell, they will no longer be considered "new" kitchen appliances.

Stainless only makes the outside stay new...the motors and compressors still age.

    :-)

Pick what YOU like, and can afford, in case you decide not to sell.

Although stainless steel appliances add a lot of style to a kitchen, they actually don't add up a lot of value to a home because if you sell or move, you can always take them with you. On the other side, potential buyers are often star-struck when they see S/S appliances. The real value increase will happen if you complete remodel the kitchen and upgrade it a notch more with the S/S appliances. If you have plans to sell in 5 years, then go for it; otherwise, I would suggest you upgrade only your stove and oven to match the new almond fridge which will be a lot more economic. The important issue is that all appliances have the same finish so that a clean, uniform look is achieved.

Good luck and enjoy your new home!

We had an almond refrigerator in our previous home, but bought a stainless steel and black stove and space-saver microwave. Since they were on different walls, it didn't look bad. When we moved to this home, we bought the matching refrigerator. You can also buy replacement front panels for dishwashers. Transitioning to the newer finishes takes a while, but I believe you'll be happier with the change. Sears sells a good stainless steel cleaner and polish. Fingerprints are easy to wipe off. Enjoy your new home!

I'd sell the new fridge and go with Stainless Steel. I bought my first home last July and bought SS frig and oven.. love both of them... Its a nice update to a old kitchen.

I live in SE Missouri, and I did sell appliances. I wouldn't get a stainless steel fridge if cleaning bothers you. Fingerprints will drive you crazy.

I would go with my preference, if you stay 10 years it will not matter what you by. Make your self happy and enjoy your new home. If you stay less than 5 stainless is the way to go.

LOL, yet he needs to take down our borders and open them to each body! he needs to disarm our nukes, He needs to disban the defense force! you should listen what he wanst to do. i guess he feels by ability of doing the above, then the terrorist can come right here to apply united states for preparation camps and that way they are going to leave us on my own! I also like how at found in nigeria they're having a difficulty with the militants and the oil refineries. we do not get any of our oil from there, yet obama seems to have in some unspecified time sooner or later talked to the militant team. He has them keen to pause what they're doing. The chief replaced into on television at present and suggested he trusts obama and could pause to attend to hearken to what he says. LOL yet another militant team that likes obama!!!!!!!
