I totally agree with the fact that there are a lot of hard core depressing bands on the scene out there, but trust me, there is hope! You just need to look harder for the good bands, a lot of great bands out there aren't popular right now because so many people are into the "death metal" bands as you say. I'm not sure what kind of music you're into, but I have been listening to Houston Calls a lot lately, they aren't super hard core, and they have stories behind their music, so you should check them out. There's a great site called garageband.com for new bands that you can check out too, and it sorts the bands by the type of rock music they play. I find tons of new bands on there all of the time.
