Does anyone know?

What the recalls are for purina dog food? I heard something about recalls on dry food and some wet foods. What about moist foods? Specefically "Moist N' Meaty". Do you know the name of the Purina brands?

    Menu Foods, a manufacturer of canned and pouched wet dog and cat food, has issued a precautionary recall of food manufactured in two of its facilities between Dec. 3, 2006 and

    March 6, 2007.

    The precautionary recall of food came after Menu Foods received reports of illnesses in cats and dogs in the U.S. that became ill with renal problems after eating the affected products. Menu Foods, a Canadian-based manufacturer is recalling all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food.

    As your family veterinarian, Banfield, The Pet Hospital, is closely monitoring all of our patients to ensure the health and safety of all the Pets we treat. We ask Pet owners to take the precautions ecessary if Pets were eating the impacted foods. Please discontinue use of canned or pouched food if the product is on the Menu Food recall list (listed below).

    It is important that Pet owners review the complete list on the Menu Foods website to view the most updated list of the specific diets that have been recalled. Pet owners with concerns or questions regarding the effective foods should contact Menu Foods at 1-866-463-6738 or online at

    http://www.menufoods.com/recall....

    Pet owners who have Pets exhibiting signs of vomiting, lethargy or decreased appetite should contact their Banfield veterinarian immediately.

    Menu Foods is conducting an investigation to determine the source of the problem.

    It has been reported by Menu foods that some of the Pets affected have developed kidney failure. Kidney failure is a serious condition for Pets and can either develop rapidly or over a long period of time. Pets that are in kidney failure can exhibit the following symptoms:

    * increased water intake

    * increased urination

    * decreased appetite

    * vomiting

    * lethargy

    Pets exhibiting any or all these signs should see a Banfield veterinarian immediately. To locate the Banfield nearest to you, call

    1-800-768-8858.

    According to Menu Foods, no other Pet food, including dry or prescription foods, is affected by this recall at this time. Royal Canin diets are not impacted by this recall.

    Pet owners can substitute the impacted foods with any dry food from the same brand or use alternative non-Menu Food canned or foil pouched wet

    foods such as:

    * Wet can/pouch cat food substitutes -- Friskies, Sheba, Fancy Feast, Pro Plan, Whiskas

    * Wet can/pouch dog food substitutes -- Mighty Dog cans, Pedigree, Alpo, Cesar, Pro Plan

    Banfield is working closely with PetSmart to ensure Pet owners are provided with alternative foods for dog and cat Pet owners to purchase.

    Menu foods has produced the Might Dog Pouches for Purina - those are not on Menu Foods Recall list - but as a precatuion Purina has created a voluntary recall for those products. Go to www.purina.com to see the company press release and also for a number where you can call for a refund. The Moist and Meaty products made by Purina are not on any of the lists - same goes for the rest of the Purina products. Hope that helps!

    A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was available from the Menu Foods Web site,

    http://www.menufoods.com/recall

    The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information — (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708 — but callers kept the lines busy for much of Saturday.

    Pet owners were worried this weekend that the kibble in their cupboard may be deadly after the recall of millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America.

    Menu Foods, the Ontario-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

    An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said.

    Many stores that sold the affected brands frantically pulled packages off shelves.

    At a Petsmart store in Union, Silviene Grzybowski became worried when the four types of Iams products she buys for her cat, Smokey, had vanished from shelves. The cat was very sick and had not been eating for days, she said.

    ``The vet told us to buy her her favorite food, but I'm going to call the vet right now,'' Grzybowski said, looking at an announcement Petsmart had taped to shelves announcing the recall.

    A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was available from the Menu Foods Web site _ http://www.menufoods.com/recall _ and consumers also could call (866) 463-6738.

    Menu Foods' chief executive and president Paul Henderson told the Associated Press on Friday that the company was still trying to figure out what happened.

    He said that the company had received an undisclosed number of owner complaints that dogs and cats were vomiting and suffering kidney failure after eating its products.

    The recall covers the company's ``cuts and gravy'' style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches from Dec. 3 to March 6.

    In Omaha, Neb., Susan Balvanz said she sometimes feeds her five cats packets of sliced meat and gravy sold by Nutro Products, one of the brands affected.

    ``I've done so much research on pet food. It didn't surprise me but it scared me all the same,'' said Balvanz.

    She said her 9-year-old cat, Boots, was especially fond of the food but seemed to have lost its appetite in the last few days. At the Missouri Valley Veterinary Clinic in Bismarck, N.D., veterinarian Jacob Carlson has been referring worried pet owners to the Menu Foods Web site.

    ``We've had a lot of calls,'' Carlson said, although none of his patients were sick.

    The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.
