    It just stands for unknown, as in unknown radiation. Using x since in math x is usually the unknown variable.

    Röntgen referred to the radiation as "X", to indicate that it was an unknown type of radiation.

    Röntgen was the father of x-ray technology

    Unknown. The discovere didn't exactly know what caused the rays.

    When Roentgen (1895) discovered radiation given off by a cathode tube, the name "X" was given to the phenomenom until it could be precisely identified.
