♡I've walked in Shinjuku at night alone many times (as have many of my friends) and I'm a women. I've never had a problem!
~Yes, the Kabuki cho area is considered a 'red light' district in Shinjuku. Take a look here:

I would say it's safe, as with anything, as long as you don't go looking for trouble.(^_-)-☆
As for 'drunken males' or 'trouble makers' you may encounter them anywhere...not just Shinjuku!(*^o^*)
So relax, enjoy Shinjuku and have a great time in Japan!♡

It should be OK. The main issue in kabukicho would be getting clipped, as in you go into a joint and they charge an outrageous price for a few drinks and if you don't pay up they beat the crap out of you. If you don't go into joints you don't know about, that won't happen. It's not like a Miike Takashi movie in reality, although I did tremendously enjoy "Ichi the Killer" and "Shinjuku Triad Society". Like those films Kabuki-cho is not for the faint of heart, but not inherently dangerous.

Basically most part of Shinjuku are safe for common ppl, unless you show your "fighting attitude". *smile*
I am walking in Shinjuku every night.

Most places in Japan, even those places considered to be "red Light" are relativly safe. They might put a good scare into you, but none are really life threatening. There is no need to fear for your life like you would walking down North Rush St. in Chicago, where at any moment a shot could ring out and you hit the ground dead.
But as with any place, I wouldn't walk around alone in an unknown area. Go with friends, or a guide.
Be safe!
Source(s): Me. I have been living in Japan for over 15 years. I've seen my share of the "red lights". - 1 decade ago
Shinjuku is safe to walk at night, no worries.
Just skip the kabukicho area while you are there, if you don't feel safe.

True a part of Shinjuku are red light districts i.e. Kabuki-cho.
It's not life threatening but avoid it or go w/ a companion to avoid trouble. (i.e. unwanted attention from drunken males)
Consult a concierge or ask your local friends to familiarize yourself w/ the areas of Tokyo. The YMCA is another resource.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the place where over 13 million people live, making it one of the most populous cities in the world but also, a big city to visit, find out more with hotelbye . Most of the city was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and then again by the bombing in the WWII, however, Tokyo was able to achieve a remarkably rapid recovery both times. The main attraction of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace with its beautiful 17th-century parks surrounded by walls and moats. The palace is still in use by the Imperial family.

If I were a woman, I would be cautious and use the buddy system. It's best to err on the side of caution.
