I am all for animal rights but don't see how this bear being hand reared hurts it's animal rights.

If they hand reared it for no reason then yes but it's mother refused to care for it.

Even if there were plans to release it into the wild (which there aren't)hand rearing wouldn't matter.Other large predators have been hand reared and then trained as juveniles to hunt and to learn that people can be dangerous. It's been done successfully with tigers and lions and cheetah's,wolves, wolverines and brown bears so why not a polar bear?

Polar bears spend most of their lives alone and even mating is a tense time for them as they just don't like spending time together,so a lack of social contact with other bears doesn't matter.

Also the cub is male so it will never have to know how to rear cubs of it's own.

I do not believe that the cub should be put down, but I also believe that the Zoo is no place for any kind of bear. We've all seen the pictures or witnessed first hand, the sight of a Polar Bear swaying from side to side in a concrete enclosure after slowly going mad. The best thing for this cub is to send it to a sanctuary (I believe there is one in Canada) where it can be weaned off human interaction and introduced to a more "natural" lifestyle.

Perhaps the people of Berlin (who are so enamoured of this cub) would be prepared to raise the money to send the cub to Canada.

I come from the land of ice and snow and there is no such thing as a tame polar bear, no matter who's raising it or how. He won't become anymore accustomed to humans than his wild counterparts already have become.

Human beings are the only real danger to polar bears. Here in Canada, wild polar bears will walk up to people homes and try to get in, looking for food. (Serves us right, we foolishly build a town right in the middle of their migration route.)

That said, let the little guy live. He can always be farmed out to another zoo if needed. I'm sure we'd have room for him in someone's backyard, up in Churchill ( that's the town I mentioned before)

You know, considering how deadly polar bears are, it's a good thing that there is an entire planet between polar bears and the penguins.

I think they should keep it alive. It said in paper yesterday that they were concerned about having a wild animal brought up to be tame, but I just don't understand that arguement - lots of baby animals that are predators in the wild are hand reared. And as polar bears are endangered species I can't understand the logic that it should be put down for this reason. Besides anything else hes really cute!!!

The protesters want it put down as they believe domesticating it is cruel - as long as its not mistreated leave it be.

Domestication with a Polar bear can only go so far, as they can quite easily rip your face off with a playful flick of their paws.

One thing animals do well on this planet is adapt in order to survive - funny how we don't see the children's rights groups asking for the child Madonna adopted to be put down (I know its not exactly the same, however the point is - the child was taken from its natural environment and brought to a totally alien culture)

Hiya, It was gorgeous, how can people want it to be put to sleep, i thought life was for preserving. Polar bears are solitary in the wild so what is wrong with this little bear living alone. DONT LET THEM DO IT.......I am so Glad the zoo is against it being put to sleep. It is more fortunate than the little sloth that was put to sleep cause its mum rejected it, I'd have all the animals they didn't want in my back garden if i could.

They should let it live!!! Who cares if its tamed or not, that’s why there are zoo's. I see no harm in them keeping the baby bear in the zoo, in facts I see it as a major attraction, and would gladly pay my money to see it. People are just so tunnelled visioned, they don’t see other possibilities! Furthermore its not fair to kill a healthy, happy animal!

There are many out there that know a lot more about this than I do and for that matter you do or ever will. The fact it was on the TV will bring the profewssionals out and the proper thing will be done. Put your efforts to use on something you know about.

They're just worried about it being handraised.

It's no different to hand raising lions if you ask me!

Don't worry, nobody will be putting the polar bear down.....
