Well I like your goal! I say that if that is something you want to try then do it. Everyone has an awkward stage in hair development. I am currently going through it. Just be confident and work towards your goal. Also don't be afraid of using a straightener or blow dryer. If you really want to start from scratch then go Bald. That should give you time to think about it while your hair grows out. Remember to just be confident and everything will work out.

My advice to you would be to go to a stylist and ask him/her for suggestions. Don't go to a place like Fantastic Sam's or Supercuts... go to an actual salon that isn't a chain. Your stylist should be able to not only give you a good cut that will do something you will be happy with, but also tell you how to properly take care of it to maintain the style.
